Customizing Your General Time-Sharing Schedule

All of the General Time-Sharing Schedules shown on this website can be customized to suit each family’s individual needs. While the sample calendar images and their descriptions include suggested days and times, these days and times (as well as any bracketed information) can be adjusted on the form associated with the selected General Time-Sharing Schedule.

To aid parents in understanding how these General Time-Sharing Schedules can be customized, you will find some helpful examples below. Example 1 uses the Green C-1 schedule to show how parents can adjust their schedule’s start day. Example 2 uses the Purple A-4 schedule to explain how parents should handle the schedules on this website which present two options – Option A and Option B. Example 3 uses the Blue M-4 schedule to show how parents can adjust one portion of their selected schedule while leaving all other sessions as is.

Example 1

description of schedule
  • Week 1 (and alternating weeks thereafter): Parent A will have physical custody of the child(ren) for three days (Session A), then Parent B will have physical custody of the child(ren) for one overnight weekday session, and then Parent A will have physical custody of the child(ren) for three days (Session B).

  • Week 2 (and alternating weeks thereafter): Parent B will have physical custody of the child(ren) for three days, then Parent A will have physical custody of the child(ren) for one overnight weekday session (Session C), and then Parent B will have physical custody of the child(ren) for three days.

This schedule provides for each parent to have the same amount of time with the child(ren) in a two-week period.

Customizing the Green General Time-Sharing Schedule C-1

The Green C-1 sample monthly calendar shows a time-sharing schedule in which each week starts on a Sunday and Parent A and Parent B exchange custody of the child(ren) on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. However, if, for example, it is inconvenient for Parent A and/or Parent B to exchange custody on Sundays due to religious services or another time commitment, they may request a different start day on the Green General Time-Sharing Schedule C-1 Form. The form could thus be filled out as follows [with the italicized text representing the information inputted by the parent(s)]:

Week 1 (and alternating weeks thereafter):

  • Session A: From 3pm on Monday to 3pm on Thursday, AND

  • Session B: From 3pm on Friday to 3pm on Monday.

Week 2 (and alternating weeks thereafter):

  • Session C: From 3pm on Thursday to 3pm on Friday.

With this customization, the Green C-1 monthly calendar would look as follows:

Example 2

description of Schedule

Parent A (the parent with VISITATION rights) will have physical custody of the child(ren)  up to [4] days  per month in the same community as the child(ren)’s residence, but not overnight, provided that Parent A shall notify Parent B at least [5] days in in advance of the time such visitation is to be exercised.

Parent B (the parent with SOLE PHYSICAL CUSTODY) will have physical custody of the child(ren) during the remaining times of the month.

Customizing the Purple General Time-Sharing Schedule A-4

All Purple schedules on this website are geared toward custody situations in which one parent has sole custody of the child(ren) and the other parent lives outside of the community in which the child(ren) reside. Due to the difficulties this distance may pose in exchanging custody of the child(ren), the Purple A-4 schedule provides parents with two options that each give the non-custodial parent four sessions per month lasting 4-8 hours each. Option A provides for four 4-8 hour sessions across four consecutive days per month. Option B provides for two 4-8 hour sessions on two consecutive days during one week per month and two additional 4-8 hour sessions on two consecutive days during another week of the month. Parents indicate which of these two options they would prefer on the Purple General Time-Sharing Schedule A-4 Form.

option a

A parent requesting Option A might, after checking the box next to Option A, fill out the form as follows [with the italicized text representing the information inputted by the parent(s)]:

From 10am to 4pm each day (not overnight) for four consecutive days, with visitation to be exercised in the same community as the child(ren)’s residence. If the parents cannot agree on the beginning date of the visitation, it shall begin on the 3rd Thursday of each month.

option b

A parent requesting Option B might, after checking the box next to Option B, fill out the form as follows [with the italicized text representing the information inputted by the parent(s)]:

The first two sessions across consecutive days shall be from 9am  to 5pm each day (not overnight) in the same community as the child(ren)’s residence. If parents cannot agree on the beginning date of the visitation, it shall be the 2nd Friday of each month. The second two sessions across two consecutive days shall be from 9am to 5pm each day in the same community as the child(ren)’s residence. If the parents cannot agree on the beginning date of the visitation, it shall be 4th Friday of each month.

Example 3

description of schedule

Weekdays: Parent A (the parent with VISITATION rights) will have one [three] to [six] hour weekday session per month (Session A).

Weekends: Parent A will have one weekend session that includes [two] overnight sessions every other weekend (Session B).

Parent B (the parent with SOLE PHYSICAL CUSTODY) will have physical custody of the child(ren) for the remainder of the month.

Customizing the Blue General Time-Sharing Schedule M-4

The Blue M-4 sample monthly calendar provides the non-custodial parent with a biweekly custodial session beginning on Friday afternoon and ending on Sunday morning, as well as one 3-6 hour session every Wednesday afternoon. However, if this parent has an unavoidable conflict on Wednesdays, they may request that their weekday session take place on a different day while keeping the start day for the biweekly session as shown. The form could thus be filled out as follows [with the italicized text representing the information inputted by the parent(s)]:

  • Session A: From 3pm to 7pm every Tuesday, AND

  • Session B: From 3pm on Friday to 11am on Sunday.

With this customization, the Blue M-4 monthly time-sharing schedule would appear as follows:
